It describes itself as the oldest and largest contemporary art centre on the island, and was inaugurated on 14 January 1994; the building’s restoration received a Europa Nostra Award the same year.

Association of visual artists and art theorists (Σύνδεσμος Εικαστικών Καλλιτεχνών και Θεωρητικών Τέχνης, φυτώριο), established in Nicosia in 2006 by five artists, initially as a professional association of visual artists. Since 2010 it has occupied the former plant nursery in the Municipal Garden, designed in 1969 by the architect Neoptolemos Michailidis, from which the association takes its name. It states aims covering the professional development of its members and the representation of visual artists on public committees.

Despite the name it states plainly that it is not a teaching college, and says it has hosted visiting artists and art students since 1969.
