ARTCYP Art in Cyprus, and a machine that draws Ελληνικά

It draws while you are asleep

Twelve of the fifteen daily plates arrive between ten at night and four in the morning. Here is why the machine keeps those hours.

No byline: this is the site describing itself.

There is a clock on the catalogue page counting down to the next plate, and it is counting to something real: at the moment it reaches zero, a plate that did not exist does.

What the clock will not be doing is ticking evenly. Twelve of the fifteen plates that arrive each day land between ten at night and four in the morning, one every half hour. The other three are spread across the rest of the day, six hours apart.

The reason is that this machine has two jobs. The other one is a room full of browsers that real people use, on a server with two cores, and the two jobs should not want the machine at the same moment. People are awake in the day. So the drawing happens at night, and by morning there are twelve more plates than there were.

The obvious question about anything that generates images on a schedule is where they all go. Fifteen a day is five and a half thousand a year. At the size these are, stored as files, that is a folder measured in gigabytes and growing, on a machine that also has to run everything else here.

They do not go anywhere. A plate is a catalogue number and a 32-bit seed, and the drawing happens on the way out to you, so a year of them is a year of numbers. The whole schedule is arithmetic on the clock rather than a counter being incremented, which means there is nothing to store even about the schedule: the site can be switched off for a fortnight and the catalogue on the other side is exactly what it would have been.

The room is still finite, though, because a list with no end is a slow page and a sitemap nobody can crawl even when it costs nothing to hold. A thousand plates fit. Past that, each new one retires the oldest, and a retired plate answers honestly: it was here, it has gone, and nothing will be drawn under its number again. The founding forty never leave, because those are the ones people linked to.

So the catalogue changes fifteen times a day, mostly while nobody is watching, and the disk usage does not change at all. That is not a trick. It is what you get for deciding, early, that the number was the artwork and the picture was only ever a rendering of it.

One geometry, three renderers

The page, the social card and the animated canvas cannot disagree, because only one of them decides anything.
