Forty plates

Forty drawings that nobody remembers making.

Each one begins as a single number and ends as something that looks decided. Between those two facts there is no studio, no afternoon, no hand hesitating over where to stop.

Only the unfolding, which happens the same way every time, for anyone who asks, and leaves nothing behind when you look away. Ask whether that counts as art and the plates will not help you. They go on resolving either way.

On titles, palettes, and what neither of them claims.

Provisional Akamas, generative plate from seed 2855729700Streamlines through a fixed vector field. Each of 220 lines starts at a random point and takes 110 steps of five units, turning at every step by the sum of three sinusoids of its current position. A line stops early if it leaves the plate. Roughly one line in seven is drawn in an accent rather than the ink colour, and each is given its own width and opacity. Provisional Six Terraces, generative plate from seed 1486282752One rectangle divided recursively. At each node the split usually runs across the longer side, at a ratio between 0.3 and 0.7. Division stops at depth eight, below 34 units, or on a 7% chance at any node. Every surviving cell is stroked with an inset, about one in five in an accent, and about one in ten also takes a translucent accent fill. Model of Copper Spoil, generative plate from seed 2211400684Nine centres, each emitting 34 closed rings whose radius grows as the 0.7 power of the ring index, so the spacing tightens as they widen. Each ring is a thirty-segment polygon pushed off true by a sinusoid whose amplitude grows with the index, and both stroke weight and opacity fall away as the rings get larger. After a Dry Cistern, generative plate from seed 183386908Forty-six bands stacked from the top down, each one a closed shape lying between two sine curves of differing amplitude, frequency and phase. The bands overlap, because each advances the cursor by only 62% of its own height. About one band in six is filled in an accent at higher opacity than the rest; the stack stops early if it runs past the bottom edge.
